Frederick Douglass's Life
In 1861 to 1865 northern states and southern states broke out into the Civil War. The north did not want slavery to spread to all of the other states in America at this time. The south on the other hand wanted to keep slavery. They believed that people different from them were nothing but an object. Frederick Douglass thought it was important for black people to fight for the North during the Civil War. He thought that because the blacks were the ones in slavery at that time and they should have been able to pick what they believed in. In the beginning of the war black people were not allowed to join the army. Until 1862 when Abraham Lincoln was president, he allowed blacks that had escaped from the South to enlist for the Northern army. That is when Frederick Douglass enrolled for the army to fight for what he believed in. That was freedom. Luckly, he was not harmed in the war unlike his friends. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. That document read that black slaves in Southern states were free from slavery. It also read that freed blacks from the south could join the Northern or Southern army. Finally slavery was coming to an end. Many blacks that had escaped from the South enlisted in the northerm army after the Civil War had started. The Emancipation Proclamation also said that the runaway slaves could not be forced to be returned to thier owners in the South. Frederick Douglass met Abraham Lincoln shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation was passed. Frederick Douglass wanted to make sure that all of the black soldiers that enlisted in the Civil War were treated fairly and given the same pay as white soldiers.
After the war ended Frederick Douglass moved to Washington D.C. to work for the government in 1872. While he worked for the government he met lots of African-Americans like himself who had escaped from the South. He continued to write books and give speeches about the way black slaves were treated and how the ecscaped from the South. One of the many books he wrote was about himself as a slave in the south. Frederick also worked to get the Congress to pass a law that said, " Black people were able to vote! " Frederick believed that everyone should have freedom and have the same rights as white people. He thought every person should have the chance to learn how to read and write. Sadly, Douglass died when he was seventy-seven years of age. His life span was from 1818-1895. His grave was put in Rochester, New York. When he died America lost a great leader, but he helped make America better for whites and blacks.
